Riverfront Simplicity on Denali Park Road
Sanctuary River Campground represents the essence of backcountry camping in Denali National Park. Situated at Mile 23 along the Denali Park Road, this small, tent-only campground offers a genuine wilderness experience with the Sanctuary River flowing just steps from the campsites.

The campground's seven sites are nestled among spruce and willow, providing natural windbreaks and a sense of seclusion. Each site includes a tent pad and access to food storage lockers, essential for bear safety in this active wildlife corridor.
Off-Grid Essentials
Campers must be self-sufficient during their stay. The campground has no running water, no electricity, and no cell service. Water must be filtered from the Sanctuary River or packed in. Vault toilets are the only developed facilities, maintaining the primitive character that draws visitors seeking authentic wilderness.
The lack of modern amenities is precisely the appeal for many visitors. Without the distractions of connectivity, campers can fully engage with the natural environment, whether that means watching wildlife, hiking off-trail, or simply enjoying the silence of the backcountry.
Wildlife and Safety
Bear safety is paramount at Sanctuary River. The area is part of an active bear corridor, and campers must use the provided food storage lockers for all food, toiletries, and scented items. Cooking should be done well away from sleeping areas, and all waste must be packed out.
Moose are frequently seen in the willow thickets along the river, and smaller wildlife including arctic ground squirrels, snowshoe hares, and various bird species are common around the campground. The dawn chorus in summer can be spectacular, with multiple species calling in the early morning light.
Access and Reservations
Access to Sanctuary River is via the park's camper bus system. Private vehicles are not permitted beyond the Savage River checkpoint at Mile 15. Campers must reserve bus tickets in addition to their campsite reservations, and all gear must be carried from the bus stop to the campsites.
Reservations open in advance through the official Denali National Park system. Given the limited number of sites, early booking is recommended, particularly for peak season dates in June and July. The campground typically operates from early June through mid-September, depending on road conditions.
