From kayaking hidden coves to biking coastal trails, I share why I believe Gulf State Park is the ultimate Alabama coast destination for your next trip.
Gulf State Park is truly the crown jewel of the Alabama coast, offering an incredible variety of environments that I rarely find in one place. Whether I’m looking for an active day of biking through coastal trails or just a quiet afternoon watching the sunset, this place has it all. I recently spent some time exploring, and here is why this is a must-visit destination.

Coastal Variety
What I love most about the park is how the landscape shifts. You go from white sandy beaches to freshwater marshes and dense maritime forests in the blink of an eye. The connectivity of the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail system makes it easy to explore miles of protected land right from the park.
My Personal Takeaways
- Bike Hack: If you bring your bike, hit the trails early in the morning. Not only is the temperature more comfortable, but the wildlife (especially the alligators and various birds) is much more active.
- Beach Pro-Tip: The beach pavilion is a fantastic spot to spend a day, but for a more secluded vibe, I recommend heading toward the eastern part of the beach access points.
- Seasonality: Fall is my absolute favorite time here. The summer heat has subsided, but the water remains warm enough for swimming well into October.
- Local Flavor: Don't leave without visiting the Gulf State Park Pier—it’s the perfect vantage point to catch a sunset or grab a snack while watching the local anglers at work.

For those who love to stay active while immersed in nature, I don't think there's a better spot on the Alabama coast. It’s managed exceptionally well and keeps me coming back every year.
